Helping children in Amuru discover science and stay in school.

Many people remember the first experiment that made them love science. We want more children in Amuru to have that moment, and the chance to keep learning.

Ongoing, with SocMed Global Uganda

Science in the classroom

At Mutema Primary School in Amuru district, we helped 10-year-olds run their first hands-on science experiments. With goggles and lab coats on, they handled the experiments with confidence, asked good questions and learned how the science works.

This was part of SocMed Global Uganda's community outreach in the CareConnect Amuru project, which the Merck Family Foundation supports. Merck's SPARK Curiosity team gave the tools and guidance, and the school supported the day. Our part was personal donations and help on the ground.

What happens next

  • SocMed volunteers and the Amuru village health teams will run the same science sessions with many more children in the district.
  • Secondary schools can ask to use a microscope for their lessons.

Next step we are exploring

Helping girls stay in school

Many girls in the district leave school early. One reason is a lack of access to sanitary products.

We are looking at how to help, together with our partners. If you work on this, or know an organisation that does, we would like to hear from you.
