Family foundation

Supporting education and health in the communities we know.

Nyuman is the family foundation of Tracy Tong Yu and Rickard Nyman. We work with local partners on children's education and community health, and we build learning tools whose profits go to good causes.

Our first work is in Amuru district, Northern Uganda, with SocMed Global Uganda.

What we do

Three areas so far. All are small and all are growing.

Amuru, Northern Uganda

Education

We help children in Amuru discover science and stay in school.

  • First hands-on science experiments at Mutema Primary School
  • Microscopes for secondary school lessons
  • Helping more girls stay in school

Community health

Village health teams are local volunteers who bring basic health care and advice to families. We volunteer with CareConnect Amuru, SocMed Global Uganda's project that helps them reach more families.

  • Bikes for the health workers, donated through the project with funding from the Merck Family Foundation
  • Early research into making bamboo bikes locally
  • A two-day foundational finance training for the health workers, run by Rickard

Learn to Give

Study apps for people preparing for important tests. Once ready, the money they make will go to good causes, and learners will help choose which ones.

  • Life in the UK and German A1
  • Free during the beta, by invitation

Where we work

Amuru is a district in Northern Uganda. Village health teams are often the closest health contact families have, and many girls leave school early.

We work there with SocMed Global Uganda, whose community outreach includes the CareConnect Amuru project. Tracy Tong Yu is a volunteer and advisor with SocMed, and Rickard volunteers with the project.

How we work

We keep it simple and open.

We work with local partners

Local organisations know what children and families need. We support their work and help on the ground when we can.

We start small

We begin with one school, one team or one app, learn what works, and then grow it.

We say where money goes

So far our support comes from our own donations. We are setting up the foundation formally, and we will publish what we fund.

About us

Tracy Tong Yu, PhD

Tracy is committed to advancing health equity by improving access to affordable, high-quality health care for underserved communities. Inspired by three generations of doctors in her family, who often provided free health care to patients facing financial hardship, Tracy upholds her family value of health equity.

Since 2023, she has led Merck Healthcare KGaA's SHAPE Program, the company's flagship social impact program focused on improving access to medicines for underserved populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Boosted by SHAPE, Merck aims to reach more than 80 million patients in LMICs per year by 2030.

Outside her professional role, Tracy supports SocMed Global Uganda's CareConnect Amuru project, which equips community health workers with mobility solutions to help them reach and care for more families in remote communities. She believes every organization, across sectors and geographies, can play a role in advancing health equity, while supporting community development and national health priorities.

Rickard Nyman, PhD

Rickard is a researcher committed to using data to protect people in crises and to give early warning when lives are at risk.

From 2016 to 2024 he led the machine learning at Hala Systems, building a civilian early warning system that warned people in Syria of incoming airstrikes and is credited with saving many lives. He also led the analysis of multilingual reports for crisis monitoring in Syria and Yemen, for stakeholders including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court. In 2026 he founded Nyman Intelligence, which builds early warning for crises and epidemics, including outbreak monitoring for East Africa. He holds a PhD from UCL, where he is an Honorary Research Fellow.

Outside his professional role, Rickard volunteers with SocMed Global Uganda's CareConnect Amuru project, where he ran a two-day foundational finance training for village health workers. He believes that reliable information, shared with the people who need it, helps communities prepare for crises and recover from them.
